How to Connect with Your Soul to Find Your True Purpose
I’ve been thinking a lot about why so many of us struggle to find our purpose, especially in our careers. We often look for complicated answers or fancy frameworks, but what if I told you that the key is actually quite simple?
And that simplicity is this: Your life’s purpose is fulfilling your soul’s desires.
That’s it – nothing more, nothing less!
Now, before you close this tab thinking, “Great, another fluffy piece about following your heart,” I want to ask that you hang in there with me because why not? You don’t have anything to lose. And chances are, if you’re reading this, you’ve searched and searched and can’t seem to understand or know what your purpose is, so you might as well give this a try.
And trust me, this approach has real depth, especially for those of us navigating mid-career transitions or feeling stuck in our professional lives.
Why Your Soul Matters in Career Purpose
Think of your soul as your most authentic inner compass. It’s been with you through every job, promotion, setback, and victory. But here’s the catch—many of us have lost the ability to hear what our souls are trying to tell us. Why? Because life happens.
Remember that toxic boss who made you question your abilities? That project failure that still makes you cringe? Those childhood experiences that taught you to play it safe? Your soul remembers all of it. And just like a rescued pet that’s been through trauma, your soul might be hiding under the proverbial bed, too scared to come out and tell you what it really wants.
The Healing-Purpose Connection
From five years of working with professionals on purpose-finding, I’ve learned that before you can clearly hear your soul’s guidance about your career path, your relationships, your passions, and what you really want -you need to do some healing work.
Think about it:
- How many times have you stayed in a job you’ve outgrown because of fear? And if you don’t heal the fear of failure, you won’t ever move on.
- How often have you dismissed a career dream because your mind said it wasn’t “practical”? And if you don’t heal the conditioning about careers have to be safe, not fun, you’ll stay in the same crappy job instead of pursuing what you love to do.
- When was the last time you actually listened to your gut feeling about a professional opportunity? And if you don’t heal your fear of what others think of you, you’ll not jump at the chance of a great opportunity because you’ll be afraid.
So, firstly, we need to heal before we can really go for it in life. So, firstly, we need to heal before we can really go for it in life.
Secondly, we need to understand the Soul’s language
Most people have no idea how to listen to their heart, or their soul. We’re not taught this.
So I want to make sure you understand something very clearly – your soul communicates through emotions. And there’s a few things that get a little tricky about this.
One, we are taught to not be emotional. So, even if we feel something, we tend to shut it down by numbing or putting it off as silly, stupid, or unrealistic.
For another, our mind loves to jump into basically every life situation, bad or good, and create its own noise, causing the soul to be afraid and send signals of fear and anxiety. For example, you might feel scared to pursue a new career direction despite the many signs that you feel lit up about trying something new. But is that your soul warning you about a wrong move, or is it your mind replaying old stories about “playing it safe” and “you’ll fail don’t change anything”?
Learning to differentiate between mind-created fears and soul-guided emotions is crucial. It’s like developing a new professional skill – it takes practice, patience, and persistence. And the key is to check in with yourself daily and not let the mind just have it’s way, unquestioned and unchallenged.
Thirdly, we need to understand our purpose isn’t linear or singular.
The path to purpose isn’t linear. Some days, you’ll feel totally aligned and clear about your direction. Other days, you’ll wonder if you’re completely off track. This is normal! The key is to keep building your soul-connection muscle through:
- Regular check-ins with your emotions
- Addressing past professional and personal wounds
- Learning to distinguish between mind-based fears and soul-based guidance
- Committing to the journey, even when it gets messy
A Different Approach to Career Fulfillment
The beautiful thing about this approach is that it leads to holistic success. We’re not just talking about landing a prestigious job title or hitting a certain salary mark. We’re talking about creating a career that feels right on all levels – where your work, relationships, and bank account all reflect your soul’s true desires.
Your Next Steps
Start small. Take a few minutes each day to sit quietly and ask yourself:
- What emotions come up when I think about my current career path?
- Where in my professional life am I making decisions from fear rather than authentic desire?
- What would I do if I truly trusted my inner guidance?
Remember, this isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s about building a stronger relationship with yourself to create a career and life that genuinely fulfills you.
